Tribeca residents formed Friends of Greenwich Street in the early 1990s to urge the City government to narrow Greenwich Street’s 90 foot width north of Chambers Street. This “Greening of Greenwich Street” project was completed in 2000, and created our 1.4 acres of new public space – a real achievement in this crowded City! Despite major infrastructure that lies under the sidewalk, our Promenade now offers 45 growing street trees, three flower gardens, ten raised planters and public seating. Also, since 2006 we have advocated extending the Promenade concept south of Chambers Street to meet up with the World Trade Center site. While there are budgetary and planning hurdles ahead, we believe that a welcoming portal to Tribeca would do a better job of inviting visitors to see our historic, unusual slice of New York City.
Our other major initiative since 2003 has been the neighborhood-wide greening of Tribeca, through our program to increase the number and health of our in-ground street trees. We are working with the Parks Department and private parties to plant many more street trees, and to find and train more care givers to help care for our street trees so they stay alive and beautiful.
