Tribeca residents formed Friends of Greenwich Street in the early 1990s to urge the City government to narrow Greenwich Street’s 90 foot width north of Chambers Street. This “Greening of Greenwich Street” project was completed in 2000, and created our 1.4 acres of new public space – a real achievement in this crowded City! Despite major infrastructure that lies under the sidewalk, our Promenade now boasts the cool shade of 45 maturing street trees, offers three shade and flower gardens, many shrub-filled raised planters and abundant public seating. Also, since 2006 we have advocated extending these amenities south of Chambers Street to meet up with the World Trade Center site. While there are budgetary and planning hurdles ahead, we believe that a welcoming portal to Tribeca offer a more inviting vista for visitors to our historic, unusual slice of New York City.
Our other major initiative since 2006 has been the neighborhood-wide greening of Tribeca, through our program to increase the number and health of all of Tribeca's in-ground street trees. Our program has been recognized City-wide and beyond as a model for community-based tree stewardship. We train and encourage individuals, building managers, and maintenance workers to create a continuing effort to keep our trees beautiful and flourishing, decade after decade.
